Designed by renowned architect David MacKenzie, the Wesleyan Methodist Church has stood as a striking landmark on Ward Road since its construction began in 1866. Built in the Gothic architectural style, it was completed in 1867, with its first service held in June of that year. The church’s design reflects the grandeur and elegance typical of 19th-century ecclesiastical architecture, with its tall spires and ornate stonework, serving as both a place of worship and a community hub for over a century.
For decades, the building remained central to the Methodist community, hosting services, gatherings, and providing support for the local population. However, by the late 20th century, like many historic churches, it faced declining congregation numbers, which led to a shift in its use. The building, with its rich history and striking architecture, eventually became a cultural and entertainment venue while maintaining much of its original character.
Since 2012, the venue — with a capacity of 385 — has gone through several transformations, operating under various names, including The Doghouse, Buskers, 20 Rocks, and Bar 15. Now known as CHURCH, this iconic building has been reborn as a vibrant multi-use space, hosting a wide variety of gigs, events, and club nights, while honouring its architectural legacy.
As CHURCH, it has been privileged to host some of the biggest names in music, from Dundee’s own The View to international acts like Snow Patrol and, most recently, Texas. On the club scene, we’ve brought global favourites such as Basshunter, Cascada, and the Vengaboys to our stage, further cementing the venue’s status as a hub for unforgettable events.
Beyond music, CHURCH is known for its commitment to inclusivity, particularly through its LGBTQIA+ friendly events, offering a safe and welcoming space for all. With events ranging from performances by RuPaul’s Drag Racecontestants to our weekly Drag Bingo, the venue has established itself as a pillar of diversity and community in Dundee.
Whether it’s live music, club nights, or inclusive social events, CHURCH continues to build on its historic foundations, providing an eclectic range of experiences for everyone who walks through its doors.
